Short bio about Joseph Trumpledor:
Trumpledor, together with//Ze'ev Jabotinsky//, developed the idea of the//Jewish Legion//to fight with the British against common enemies. Together they formed the//Zion Mule Corps// in 1915, considered to be the first all-Jewish military unit organized in close to two thousand years, and the ideological beginning of the//Israel Defense Forces//. He fought in the//Battle of Gallipoli//with the Zion Mule Corps, where he was wounded in the shoulder. He had already lost his left arm while serving in the Russian army in 1902. This did not deter him at all. Upon his return toRussia in 1918, he organised Jews to defend themselves and established theHeHalutz, a youth organization that prepared immigrants foraliyah(immigration to Palestine), and returned to Palestine himself, then under the//British Mandate//. While protecting Tel Hai, a farming village, Arabs attacked and he was stabbed and died en route to a hospital. His last words were אין דבר, טוב למות בעד ארצינו. These words closely resemble a translation ofthe famous line from the//Roman////lyrical////poet////Horace//'sOdes(iii 2.13), which can be rendered in//English//as "It is sweet and honourable to die for one's country," or "It is sweet and fitting to die for the fatherland" --- and which inspired numerous nineteenth- and twentieth-century nationalist patriots in various countries. The town ofKiryat Shmona("City of Eight") is named after Trumpeldor and the seven others who died defending Tel Hai. There are many memorials dedicated to Trumpledor throughout the country.
